Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel (24 March 1820 – 11 May 1891)
Today is the birthday of Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel (known as Edmond Becquerel), a French physicist, born into a wealthy family in Paris.  Son of the physicist Antoine Becquerel and father of the more famous physicist Henri Becquerel who was one of those who discovered radiation,   Edmund studied and then worked with his father at the at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle.  He was interested in the solar spectrum, magnetism, electricity and optics.

In 1839, at the age of 19, while experimenting in his father's laboratory he created the first photovoltaic cell.  However, he was especially interested in photography and took many impressive photography of Paris such as the one below; then he went on to produce colour photographs of the solar spectrum in 1848.  He also studied light and solar radiation.

His publications include La lumière, ses causes et ses effets (Light, its Causes and Effects), a two-volume treatise which became a standard text.
